Heaven Scent

Ουρανια Μυρϖβδια

One sweet September day, Theo Manual (Uncle Manny) decided to treat me to a drive up the highest mountain on the island, Lastos. "One of the most breathtaking sights on the island!” he proclaimed. While we drove our jeep slowly up the winding dirt road, I began to notice it becoming narrower and the cliffs steeper. Theo was beginning to panic, when I suddenly spotted a small fork in the road. We couldn't believe our eyes, as hidden, deep within the woods was a small exso-ekleeseeah (church). I could smell a mystical scent coming from within it: a combination of beeswax, incense, old wood and rose. Mesmerized, I opened the squeaky door, only to be gifted with the most beautiful sight I had even seen or smelled. The inside was meticulously maintained, with a beautiful, hand painted iconostasio (alter with icons). There were candles and incense lit, along with vases filled with fresh roses. It was truly heaven sent! Exhausted, we took a short respite, and said our prosefhees (prayers) of thanks and while lighting a few candles. When we returned home that afternoon, I realized I had not gotten to see the view from the top of the mountain. Yet I had no feelings of regrets, since I believe that day I had truly seen the most breathtaking sight on the island!
